About the Studio

HongFeng Art Studio

HongFeng Art (鸿风堂) was founded in Xiamen in 1978. For 48 years the studio has researched and revived Chinese decorative painting traditions — hand-painted folding screens, antique-style wall murals, and folk-scene figure painting — while developing its own techniques for gold-traced lacquer relief and inlay furniture. Every piece is made using gold and silver leaf, mineral pigment, and hand-mounted paper or silk, entirely by hand in the studio's Xiamen workshop.

The studio's work furnishes hotels and residences worldwide, including the Park Hyatt Sanya, Grand Hyatt Hong Kong, The Westin Xiamen, and Raffles Singapore, and has been presented as a state gift to Singapore's Lee Kuan Yew, now held in the collection of the Lee Kuan Yew Foundation. HongFeng Art has exhibited at the China Import and Export Fair for 21 consecutive years and is recognized as an Intangible Cultural Heritage practitioner in Xiamen. Every commission still begins the way it did in 1978 — with a conversation about the space it will fill.

How It's Made

A Slow, Hand-Built Process

Each panel moves through raw material, hand application of gold or silver leaf, and layered hand-painting before it's finished — a process that unfolds over weeks, not days.

Raw Material

The piece begins as raw paper, silk, or wood, prepared and sized to its final dimensions before any gold leaf or paint is applied.

In Progress

Gold or silver leaf is applied sheet by sheet, then the design is hand-painted in mineral pigment across multiple layers.

Finished Work

The completed piece is sealed and mounted — framed, hinged as a screen, or set for inlay — ready for delivery to your space.

Common questions from people commissioning a piece for the first time.

How long does a commission take?

Lead time depends on the size and complexity of the piece — larger folding screens and multi-panel works take longer than a single framed panel. You'll receive an estimated timeline as part of your proposal, before any deposit is due.

How much does a commission cost?

Pricing depends on format, size, and materials (gold leaf vs. silver leaf, paper vs. silk vs. xuan paper). After the consultation, our designer and production artists prepare a proposal with a firm price before any work begins.

Do I need to pay upfront?

A 30%–50% deposit of the total project cost is due to begin production, once you've approved the design proposal. Draft — confirm balance due date (e.g. on completion, before shipping).

Can I customize the size or subject?

Yes. Every piece is made to order — sized to fit your space and composed around a subject discussed during your consultation, whether drawn from classical Chinese painting themes or adapted to your preference.

Do you ship internationally?

Yes, we ship internationally by air freight, carefully packed for safe transit to your door.

What formats are available?

Folding panel screens, framed art, wall panels, and furniture inlay. If you're not sure which suits your space, mention it in your inquiry and we'll advise during the consultation.

How should I care for a hand-painted gold-leaf piece?

Avoid direct sunlight and high humidity, and clean with a soft duster only.
